Welcome to ‘Sport 4 Development Ireland’
Sport 4 Development Ireland, or S4D Ireland, is a not for profit project set up to develop and promote the field of Sport for Development, also known as Development through Sport, in Ireland. It has evolved out of the ‘Sport4Development’ exhibition held over the weekend of the 5th and 6th of April, 2014 to coincide with the first UN designated International Day of Sport for Development and Peace which was Sunday the 6th of April, 2014.
The initial aims of Sport 4 Development Ireland are to:
- Promote awareness and understanding of how sport is used as a tool to achieve non-sporting objectives and outcomes.
- Establish an online presence and space for the Irish Sport 4 Development sector.
- Encourage and facilitate engagement between the sports development and international development communities in Ireland.
- Advocate for the importance of the Sport for Development sector, in a local and global context, from an Irish perspective.
S4D Ireland operates through a website sport4development.ie and other social media presence via Facebook and Twitter. The initial goal is to reach out and connect with Irish S4D stakeholders, particularly those involved with or running projects or programmes. Through our website and social media we highlight activity, events and organisations working in and news from the field.
We will also be showcasing examples of existing projects and programmes from around the globe focusing on a diverse range of goals and objectives reflecting the breath of the sector and reflecting current best practise.
We are currently working towards our official launch date on the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace which takes place next year on Monday the 6th April 2015. We will be running a campaign in the lead up to the day as well as hosting an event on the day itself.
